Horn Dance

I’m in mourning.

Every year, on the Monday after the first Sunday after the 4th September, the Abbots Bromley horn dance is performed around the village and surrounding area of Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire. It is a fantastic calendar custom which, unlike a number of local customs, warmly welcomes visitors – to the extent that onlookers are encouraged to take up the horns and participate themselves. For the last few years I have made the pilgrimage each September with long time friend and fellow customs junky Averil and have written about the experience before. But not this year. This year, with both kids starting new schools the previous week, and having just returned from a fortnight abroad, it was just too much to fit in. Doesn’t stop me pining though!

The Official site of the Horn Dance can be found here. If you get the chance to go next year, do. It’s fantastic.
