Fiction Friday

Well, that was a week that was. I feel like I’m crawling to the end of it but….it’s Friday. Yay!

This week I Have mostly Been Reading

Ah, this is a lovely book. Set in the wilds of Alaska, it’s a fairy tale for grown-ups. It tells the story of Jack and Mabel who move to a homestead in 1920s Alaska to make a fresh start and escape the tragedy of losing a baby several years before. The cold and the starkness of the landscape seem to reflect the inner lives of the main characters, until a mysterious young girl appears on their land. The characters are beautifully described and developed, the imagery evocative and haunting. This is one of those books that stays with you a long time after you’ve finished reading it.

Next Week I Will Be Reading

This was published several years ago, and has been on my list of books I should read for quite some time. A friend of mine who has Polish and Belarusian family said that this book was painfully accurate in its description of east European immigrant and second/third generation life, and also painfully funny. I think this will be a good one 🙂
